The Rise of Telemedicine
What started as a necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic has now become a cornerstone of
modern medical care: telemedicine. Virtual visits are no longer just a temporary fix. Instead they
are transforming how patients and physicians connect. Today, nearly 40% of patients report
using telehealth for at least one appointment in the past year (CDC, link).
Telemedicine offers unique advantages: accessibility for far-away patients, reduced travel and
wait times, and continuity of care for debilitating disease. It also supports preventive health by
making it easier to schedule quick follow-ups or wellness check-ins. In fact, research shows
telehealth can improve outcomes in conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes by
increasing patient engagement (CDC, link).
However, virtual medicine isn’t without limitations. Physical exams, procedures, and certain
diagnostics still require in-person care. Privacy concerns and digital access gaps also need
addressing. But when paired with traditional visits, telemedicine enhances comprehensive care,
which is why we choose to embrace it. For many patients, the best model may be a hybridized
version of healthcare, blending the convenience of virtual access when appropriate with the
hands-on depth of office visits. And when done thoughtfully, telemedicine brings quality directly
into patients’ homes without losing the connection that makes care personal.
